A vibrant example of Japanese textile design, this haori showcases a modern interpretation of shibori, executed using a machine-assisted pseudo-shibori technique, introduced in the post-1970s era to make shibori aesthetics more accessible for everyday fashion wear.
The base fabric features a densely patterned diamond kanoko micro-repeat, revealing the use of screened or heat-set resist patterns rather than hand-knotted dots. Layered over this field is a bold, diagonal red lattice, a contemporary graphic motif not found in pre-war shibori but common in department-store and boutique haori from the 1990s onward. The overall effect is striking: a playful, modern reimagining of a deeply traditional textile vocabulary.
Inside, the haori is lined with a brilliant white, likely synthetic, fabric featuring stylized vermillion wave motifs. The combination of bright exterior and graphic interior places the haori in the period when kimono garments transitioned from formalwear to expressive street fashion.
Designed as a casual outer-layer haori, this piece would have been worn open over a kimono or paired with contemporary clothing, functioning as an everyday jacket for outings, social visits, or seasonal festivals. The lightweight crepe makes it suitable for spring, early summer, and autumn wear.
This haori is a beautiful example of Japan’s continuing reinvention of its own dress traditions: accessible, joyful, and highly wearable piece that bridges heritage and modern design sensibilities. Perfect for those interested in incorporating Japanese dress within their everyday wardrobe.
